I did my first 10 miler race today. It was great location right in the lake. I had never been to the Leslie Spits before. Its really great location to especially to run, its green and by lake and flat. I was hoping to a much better time especially given that I had run this distance before but I was not there today from start I was a bit slower. I took couple of blocks and a gel but it was too late. Over all it was good run and good preparation for the upcoming #STWM half marathon. Now I am bit worried about the distance not sure why running in heavy rain and thunderstorm was not as bad as today. The Sun was out all along bit it was not too hot it was perfect temperature and felt good. My calf injury did not bother me much once I was warmed up it was all good. My ankle did feel weak after 12K and it did cost some time to ignore it; I have to ice my foot and rest today. Here is how the race looked. Oh Garmin 610 GPS and heart rate were both on the spot accurate today. For a change. I have been saying this for a while that I have been running for a while now and I was lucky to not catch any injury. I guess that is really a false statement, there were tell tell signs and I should have backed OFF. I knew all along that this happens and have seen so many runners go through this and yet ignored that and kept pushing and trying to improves times , run longer and push harder on hills. My calf muscle which was bothering for a about 2 weeks finally decided to raise a red flag. I was limping for a week and yet ran 18K and tried to run today. Surprisingly running still is more comfortable than walking. I guess it was just blood flow which masked the pain and made it worse every time I stopped today. I did visit a physio yesterday who did a acupuncture and helped a bit, but it was bad again today morning. With a race planned for this Sunday which is not insignificant distance. I decided to pull the plug on training and rest a bit. I also was icing my calf muscle for last few days but it was too messy to move with the ice pack around me. Found this cool and fancy ice pack in running room and it is really great. It does not use water it has gel which soaks water and freezes. It has sleeve that compresses and holds the ice pack in right spot. This is really cool thing that they make. I did run today but was less than 4K in total and not worth mentioning too. So #STWM is getting close and today we ran 18K that was so tiring. I was almost dead by the time I finished it. It was pouring like hell when we started. I went mostly due to peer pressure and I know with out the group I would never have run or got till here. The time sucked as usual the Sunday runs I find it harder more to do with running in morning than evening. My last few evening runs have bettered the time every day but the morning run still suffer. I found few more runners like me. I my case its more to do with having necessary carbs before running. I am trying to get a decent breakfast now before every run. But than it has to be small portion to avoid throwing up before run. I hope I work this balance out in next 4 weeks. Garmin heart rate monitor again failed today and I really need to find a solution for this before the race. It was supposed to help tune my run by controlling heart rate better. Need to call garmin support again about this. We ran all the way to Ballamy beacy past ash bridges bay. It was fantastic route along the lake. So today's run was supposed to be steady state 8K. It was really great run there was no stop and go no lights on the way to Cherry Beach. The Sun was setting it was nice and orange everywhere. The last few weeks of intense training and hill training has really helped the pace. I can get down to 6:15 and keep it over and over again. I still am doing to 10:1 and that definitely helps avoiding the burnout. We had couple of new people join the Thursday group which is good change as last few weeks the numbers were dwindling down. For a change Garmin heart rate monitor was perfect today and so was the Garmin 610 GPS. It was exactly as the route said all the markers matched too. I guess weather does affect GPS quality. The route along Queen's quay to Cheery beach is always good. I use to hate it because it had no lights on it but it was the best part no stopping and it was great run. Here is how the run went. So finally I am done with the hill training and doing the final 8 repeats on @Canoe landing site felt really great. After a really long time I was not the last soul to finish it and I lapped someone. I know its bad to say that especially when I was on other end but it does feel good. The last few loops were stop and go but I was able to actually sprint the last part which was really good. The heart still needs some training to get the average rate down to 150bpm. Its still very and stays above 178 for some time which may not be good. I need to run slow for that which the Sunday runs' help a lot. I am happy that hill training is done. Garmin heart rate monitor was good again today too for a change. My New balance 880v4 seem to worn out and now I can feel the front foot impact much more that when I got this before. I am thinking of getting a 2nd pair so that it is broken in before the race. Here is how today's run went. My speed has been improving a lot recently I did my PB in my #YorkvilleRun and today I beat 1 min from that time. Still not under 30min mark but I am going to be there soon. I can feel that. #STWM is just 5 weeks away and now focus is on distance and keeping fit as much possible. I need avoid injuries and hopefully I will finish the #STWM. Today route was different we went east to jarvis and up to Wellesley and back. Surprise the Garmin heart rate was back to normal, I still need the new elastic strap need to find buy it. The old heart rate monitor strap slips or moves to a spot where it looses the contact and than from there on its all downhill. Here is how the route was. So last weekend as you know now, I ended up doing 2 back to back races. A 1oK #NightRace followed by early morning 5K #YorkvilleRun. Both races were good and I did my PB in both. But now I can feel the symptoms of burnout. my Ham strings are like a Rock now so I am over using my Quads. This could soon go down spirally and end up preventing me from completing my half marathon #STWM. Here I am in week 12 of training and I was struggling to finish my 5K tempo run and I am seriously thinking of resting for a week. Its like catch 22 if I stop I might not be able to catch up and if I don't I wont be able to finish the training. I finished it and used the foam roller and hope it helps to make it better by tomorrow. This race after I ran a 10K yesterday night so I was not sure if would be good run. The last run ended quite late and din't get enough sleep so that made the me feel really bad about going to the race. It was really nice morning with mild temps in low teens which actually was good. The race went well I hit the PB for 5K again though I had wished to get under 30 it did not happen. I am still run out of breath need to keep practising more and more to get better time. I was a bit dehydrated to start the race but again as usual after the first 10K things were good. I still had to 10:1 a bit to keep heart rate reasonable. Here is how the run went. So I am down with 1st race of the weekend. The Toronto #Nightrace was fun at first I found the headlight we had to wear really annoying but once I got out of the crowd and picked a good pace it did not bother me. It was fun race lots of people with neon Pink and Green coloured T-Shirts and headlights lit up the Sunny brooks park. The race was really good I started with a really good pace and I think I did 1st 5 under 30. The 2nd 5K took a bit longer around 7K I felt like hell. Once I crossed 8K i was actually running at really good pace and it was really fast with short breaks in between. This probably was my best time for 10K. Next 10K I have to shave 8 mins to get under 60min time. The route was familiar and fun no steep hills just gentle uphill and downhill trails. It was bit crowed for so many runners doing a loop. But no accidents so it was great. More after tomorrow's Yorkville run So its all set for weekend races, yes races I have 2 back to back. Not something I planned just happened to be so. I have a 10K planned for Saturday night and a 5K planned for Sunday. Today's run was 7K but the humidity just killed and my foot pod slipped and it was hurting as hell. Should have stopped and fixed that, now it still hurting hopefully rest fixes it by Saturday night. I tried the GU chomp it tasted good the run was too short too tell if it helps or no. I did not hurt I burped a few times but it was ok. I still need to try the Gel sometime before the #STWM. The heart rate was much elevated mostly due to humid weather and its good the weather on weekend is cooler. Todays run route also covered the Sunday;s yorkville run and so it was good practice run. |
